student travel ib programme extended essay dp tour

We have focused on three destinations for our Radical Sabbatical for Student trips in 2006: Costa Rica, Galapagos, and Tuscany. The difficult task of narrowing the list of potential destinations was driven by a number of criteria:

  1. Nature - we chose destinations where nature plays a dominant role in the experience, whether it is the volcanic isles of the Galapagos, the lush rainforests of Costa Rica, or the manicured countryside of rural Italy
  2. Culture - we chose destinations which exhibited a braod range of cultural diversity, whether in the form of vibrant ethnic communities, dynamic artistic traditions, or rich historical legacies.
  3. Community - we choose destinations which could benefit most from the community service contributions of our students, whether in the form of scientific work, social work or ecological work.
  4. Infrastrucutre - we chose destinations with sufficent insfrastructure (in the form of access to teachers, technological capabilities, laboratories, etc) to support the research effort and community work of the students
  5. Safety - we chose destination with stable democratic political systems, low crimes rates and minimal ongoing health risks.

Discover the fascinating ecosystems of the Monteverde Cloud Forest and lowland rainforest.  Work with Sea Turtle biologists on Caribbean beaches to study the nesting habits of the leatherback turtle, and work to preserve their natural habitat.  Over one fourth of Costa Rica is protected by a national park system, preserving twelve “life zones” that are home to an astounding abundance of plant and animal life.
